Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team scored five unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and hand St. Mary's a 5-2 loss Tuesday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (3-4-2) snapped the Cardinals (5-2-2) five-game winning streak by shutting down the visitors after falling two goals down in the first period.
Senior Gage Christianson scored two goals and assisted on another, while junior James Ring had a goal and an assist. Freshmen Mack Stevens and Adem Arifi also tallied their first collegiate goals in the game.
At the other end of the ice, senior Austin Campbell made 38 saves to remain unbeaten in four starts this season (2-0-2).
St. Mary's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period, striking first at the 7:54 mark and extending its advantage on a penalty shot at 12:37.
Christianson quickly answered for MSOE, jumping on a loose puck and scoring unassisted just 21 seconds after his team fell down by two.
In the second period, the Raiders took the lead with a pair of goals. Stevens scored first to tie the game at 2-2 off assists from juniors Brandon Unser and Conner Enciso. Then, Ring re-directed a shot by junior Zach Simpson past the goalie for the go-ahead goal.
Christianson added an insurance goal at 8:00 of the third period off an assist from Ring and Arifi closed out the victory with an empty-net goal at 18:34 with an assist from junior Clint Garris.
MSOE conceded a 40-34 shot advantage and capitalized on special teams. The home team went 2-for-6 with the man advantage and killed off all five SMU power plays.
This was the second win in four days for the Red & White in which it overcame an early 2-0 deficit, having come back to topple UW-Stout last Friday.
The Raiders now have a break before returning to the ice Dec. 9 to open a weekend series with UW-Superior.
