Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team posted its seventh comeback victory of the season when it netted three unanswered goals and defeated Marian 3-1 Friday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (8-6-4, 4-5-3 NCHA) fell behind 1-0 early in the second period lit the lamp twice in the period and tacked on a third goal in the final frame to upend the Sabres (10-9-1, 8-7 NCHA).
Senior Casey Moneer, junior Brett Wagner and junior Jerad Tafoya were the goal-scorers for MSOE as it won its third-straight match and moved into fourth place in the NCHA South Division, just two points out of the final Harris Cup Playoff spot.
Derek Thorogood put the visitors ahead just 2:19 into the second period, as they controlled the momentum early in the game.
Moneer's goal got the Raiders on the board and lit a fire under the offense. Freshman Nick Redmon started the play with the first of his two assists, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone. Moneer that fired a shot over the goalie's shoulder from the right wing to level the score at 1-1.
Just 2:25 later, it was Wagner the team ahead with an assist from Redmon and sophomore Eric Tien.
MSOE tacked on an insurance goal during the final minutes of a seven-minute power play, with Tafoya getting the goal just 52 seconds into the final period to make it 3-1. Senior Gage Christianson and sophomore Matthew Romund set up the goal.
Senior Austin Campbell made 29 saves in goal to remain unbeaten this season at 5-0-2. Mike Baldwin stopped 20 shots for Marian.
The Raiders' penalty killing unit was in fine form, killing off all seven Sabre man advantages. Meanwhile, they capitalized on one of just three power play chances.
MSOE now sits at 13 points, just two back of third-place Concordia Wisconsin and one up on fifth-place Lake Forest with a game in hand on the Foresters. CUW defeated No. 1 St. Norbert 4-2 to prevent the Red & White from pulling even.
The Raiders and Sabres wrap up the weekend series Saturday evening in Fond du Lac. The pick drops at 8 p.m.
