Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – Junior Brett Wagner scored two goals as the MSOE hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit in a 4-3 loss to Marian Saturday evening at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
The Raiders (8-7-4, 5-6-3 NCHA) trailed the Sabres (11-9-1, 9-7-0 NCHA) at 2-0 and 3-1, but tallied three goals in the second period to tie the game heading into the third before a late goal proved the difference.
The home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period when Wagner pulled a goal back on the power play at 9:13 of the second period. Marian quickly answered with a power play goal of its own to re-establish the two-goal cushion.
Junior Zach Simpson and Wagner then each lit the lamp in the final two minutes of the second period to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third period. Simpson's score came at 18:00 and Wagner beat the second-period horn at 19:52.
Nick Monfils broke the 3-all tie 6:31 into the third period and the Raiders couldn't muster another equalizer.
Simpson added an assist in the game, setting up Wagner's equalizer, while senior Jordan Guth up a pair of scores.
Marian finished with a 34-28 shot advantage, though it was the Raiders that held a decisive 14-8 edge in the thrilling second period. Both teams went 2-for-4 on the power play. Senior Austin Campbell made 30 saves in suffering his first loss of the season (5-1-2).
The Sabres' Mike Baldwin stopped 25 shots on the night to get his team the series split.
The Raiders return to the ice with a Thursday-Friday series against Lawrence, which kicks off Thursday night in Appleton.
