Hockey Falls to Lake Forest in Series Opener

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Lake Forest scored with just 5:28 remaining in regulation to escape with a 3-2 victory over the MSOE hockey team Friday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (4-5-3, 1-4-2 NCHA) twice erased deficits in the game, but did not have a third in them against the Foresters (9-5, 5-4 NCHA) in the first game of a weekend series.

Sophomore Eric Tien scored a goal and assisted on another for the Red & White, while senior Jordan Guth also lit the lamp on the night.

Lake Forest scored once in each period, with Travis Hill's goal at 14:32 of the final frame providing the difference on the night. LFC had opened the scoring at 7:27 of the first period on a power play, holding a 1-0 advantage at the first intermission.

The lead held until near the midpoint of the period two when Tien got the Raiders on the board. Junior Dylan Dailey sent a long pass from behind the red line through the neutral zone to Tien just over the blue line and he skated in on the goal, finishing for his second score of the season. Sophomore Matthew Romund was also credited with an assist on the play.

The level score lasted just over a minute when the Foresters re-assumed the lead with an even-strength goal at 10:48.

This time, it was a Tien pass that got the Raiders back on equal footing. He laid off a pass for Guth at the point and the 6-foot-5 center one-timed the puck just inside the pipe to make it 2-2 at 15:34.

MSOE held a slight 28-27 shot advantage on the night, including 9-6 in each of the final two periods as it looked to overtake the visitors. In a matchup of two of the top power play teams in the league, Lake Forest went 1-for-6 on the man advantage and the Raiders were unable to take advantage of two power plays.

Junior Zach Woodman made 24 saves in goal for MSOE, which played the final 1:12 with an empty net to no avail. George Argiropoul stopped 26 shots for the Foresters to earn the win.

The series wraps up Saturday evening in Lake Forest. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
