HANCOCK, Michigan – Seniors Zach Simpson and Brett Wagner had two goals each and senior Zach Woodman posted his second shutout in three games to lead the No. 15 MSOE hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Finlandia Friday night at Houghton County Arena.

The Raiders (3-0, 1-0 NCHA) scored four special teams goals in downing the Lions (0-1, 0-1 NCHA) in the league opener for both teams.

Simpson scored a pair of goals and Wagner tallied back-to-back shorthanded goals to power the offense. Senior James Ring also got on the board with his first goal of the season.

MSOE lit the lamp on each of its first two power plays of the night. Simpson netted the eventual game-winning goal at 5:33 of the first period. Freshmen Will Gauthier and Garrett Gintoli picked up assists on the play.

Ring doubled the lead at 2-0 at the 10:10 mark in the second period. Senior Jerad Tafoya and sophomore Michael Romund assisted on the power play goal. Simpson then struck for his second goal of the game exactly six minutes later with the teams at equal strength. Gintoli and Wagner tallied assists.

The third period featured six early penalties, which resulted in a FinU power play at 7:16 of the frame. Wagner pounced on a loose puck just inside the blue line and beat the goalie for a shorthanded goal to make it 4-0 at 8:33.

After another three Raider penalties, the penalty-killing line struck again. This time, it was Gauthier finding Wagner in front of the goal at 14:24.

MSOE went 2-for-6 on the power play in the game and scored on 2-of-8 Finlandia man advantages.

Woodman stopped 23 shots for his second shutout in three games to start the season. He lowered his early-season goals against average to 0.33 and raised his save percentage to .988 (80-of-81).

The Red & White held a 38-23 shot advantage in the game.
