Box Score GENEVA, Illinois – Sophomore Michael Romund scored twice as the MSOE hockey team jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on for a 5-3 win over Aurora Friday evening at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The Raiders (10-7-5, 7-6-4 NACC) scored three times in the first period and added two more goals in the second to get past the Spartans (4-17-1, 4-12-1 NCHA) and pull within one point of Concordia Wisconsin in the third and final playoff position in the NCHA South Division.
In addition to Romund's goals, juniors Clint Garris, James Ring and freshman Zack Davis each had a goal and assist on the night.
Garris opened the scoring just 3:40 into the game off assists from senior Gage Christianson and junior Jerad Tafoya. Ring and Garris then set up Davis' first collegiate goal at 12:02 on a power play. MSOE made it 3-0 on Romund's first goal of the game off an assist from junior Chris Hinrichs just over two minutes later.
In the second period, Ring struck for a goal of his own at 7:51 on Hinrich's second assist of the night and additional help from Davis. Romund capped the team's scoring at 12:24 to make it 5-0 off an assist from freshman Kevin Shand.
Aurora pulled a goal back late in the second period to make it 5-1 heading into the final frame. Drew Doyon then tallied a pair of goals in the third period to make the game interesting at 5-3, but the Spartans would get no closer.
MSOE held a 31-29 shot advantage in the game and went 1-for-3 on the power play. The team also killed off six of AU's seven power plays. Junior Zach Woodman returned to the ice after six games away and made 26 saves for the win. A pair of goalies combined to stop 26 shots for the home team.
With the win, the Raiders are now tied with Lake Forest for fourth place in the NCHA South Division, one point back of CUW with three games remaining. The Falcons fell to Adrian 8-1 Friday, while LFC downed Finlandia 5-2.
The series concludes Saturday at the Kern Center. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
