Hockey Comes Back for Tie at St. Scholastica

Box Score

DULUTH, Minnesota – The MSOE hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit to skate to a 2-2 tie with St. Scholastica Saturday afternoon at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Raiders (2-3-1, 2-1-1 NCHA) came back from an early deficit to tie or take the lead for the fourth-straight game but was unable to get past the Saints (2-1-1, 2-1-1 NCHA) in the end.

MSOE's power play unit was once again in top form, scoring two times with the man advantage for the fourth-straight game. Sophomores Garrett Gintoli and Stian Owens each lit the lamp on the power play in the second period for the comeback.

CSS jumped out ahead with two goals just 25 seconds apart in the opening period. The hosts got on the board first at 14:29 and very quickly struck again at 14:54 to make it 2-0.

The Raiders rallied in the dressing room at the intermission and got on the board 2:40 into the next frame. Gintoli finished from an assist from junior defenseman Nick Redmon just 46 seconds into the man advantage.

After an empty, three-shot power play midway through the period, Owens did well to make short work of the next time MSOE would be given an extra player. He pulled the team level at 2-2 at the 19:15 mark of the second period, just seven seconds after the face-off. He was assisted by sophomores Will Gauthier and sophomore Adem Arifi.

The Red & White dominated the second period, outshooting the Saints 13-5. Unfortunately, the momentum swung in the third period and it was the defense's opportunity to make the score hold. St. Scholastica had a 13-4 shot advantage in the frame. For the game, CSS led the category 28-22.

MSOE's two power-play goals came on just four attempts while the defense killed off all four power plays it faced, including over the final minute of regulation.

Sophomore Rock Boynton made 26 saves in the game.

The Raiders have three weeks off before returning to the ice Nov. 30 at Lake Forest.
