Hockey Settles for Draw at Hamline

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Three different players lit the lamp as the MSOE hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with Hamline late Friday afternoon at the TRIA Center.

The Raiders (3-6-2) scored first and built a 3-1 lead but could not hold on against the home-standing Pipers (2-9-1).

Senior Michael Romund and sophomores Jeff Makowski and Garrett Gintoli were goal-scorers while five different players supplied assists.

Makowski opened the scoring just 4:07 into the game to stake MSOE to an early lead. Senior Matthew Romund and junior Nick Redmon assisted on the goal.

The lead would carry until late in the period when the teams traded goals on a single Hamline power play. The Pipers pulled level with a short-handed score at the 14:24 mark, just 30 seconds into the Red & White's man advantage. The extra man did not go to waste, though, as Romund pulled the team ahead once more with just three seconds remaining on the power play. Sophomores Adem Arifi and Brady Chin had assists on the play.

Gintoli seemed to add an insurance goal inside of a minute into the next period. He played a combination with juniors Evan Kearns and sophomore Kevin Shand to make it 3-1 just 0:34 into the period.

Hamline did not back down, firing in two goals in the opening minutes of the third period to pull even at 3-3. The score would hold through the remainder of regulation and the five-minute extra period.

Sophomore Harry Vangellow made 40 saves in goal to register the result.

The Pipers held a 43-38 shot advantage in the game and each team went 1-for-6 on the power play in the game.

The Raiders return to action Saturday across the border, back in Wisconsin, at UW-River Falls. Puck drops at 4 p.m.
