Romund's Late Winner Clinches Ostapina's 250th Win

Box Score

ANGOLA, Indiana – Junior Michael Romund scored with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to send the MSOE hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Trine and capture head coach Mark Ostapina's 250 coaching win at the program Saturday afternoon at Thunder Ice Arena.

The Raiders (11-12-2, 7-10-1 NCHA) overcame a 1-0 deficit with a pair of third-period goals to upend the Thunder (6-17-2, 2-14-2 NCHA) and cap the regular season on a winning note.

MSOE now turns its focus to the Harris Cup Playoffs next weekend against No. 1 Adrian. A two-game quarterfinal series starts Friday in Michigan.

For Ostapina, he becomes the first coach in MSOE's athletic department history to record 250 wins at the school. He surpassed 300 overall wins at the tail end of last season.

Heading into the final period of the game, it seemed as though the milestone victory could allude the coach, but sophomore Nick Redmon revitalized the Raiders with a quick score inside the first minute of the period. At the tail end of a power play that carried over from the second period, Redmon struck for his fourth goal of the season at the 41-second mark of the period. He was assisted by seniors Conner Enciso and James Ring.

The timing created a nice symmetry with Romund's winner, which came at 19:20 with assists credited to Ring and freshman Nate Rogers.

Trine had struck first against the run of play in the game, opening the scoring at 13:37 of the second period. The Raiders were in the midst of a period in which they outshot the Thunder 19-10.

Freshman Rock Boynton was solid in goal in his first start since Dec. 30. He made 22 saves to post his third game with just one goal allowed in six starts this season.

MSOE outshot Trine 38-23 in the game and killed off all five Thunder power plays in the game.
