Hockey Comeback Falls Short at CUW

Box Score

MEQUON, Wisconsin – The MSOE hockey team attempted to overcome a three-goal deficit, scoring twice in the third period, but fell short in a 4-3 loss to Concordia Wisconsin Saturday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The Raiders (10-11-2, 6-9-1 NCHA) trailed the Falcons (15-6-2, 11-5 NCHA) 3-0 and again at 4-3 before making things interesting with a pair of late goals.

Senior Brett Wagner opened the scoring and added an assist while senior Jerad Tafoya struck for a pair of scores during the comeback attempt.

After a scoreless opening period, Concordia opened the scoring with a flurry of goals, lighting the lamp three times in a 4:02 span, including back-to-back goals in 1:15 to open a 3-0 lead at the 7:30 mark of the second period.

Wagner pulled a goal back at 17:32 of the period on a power play with assists from freshmen Garrett Gintoli and Nate Rogers. Unfortunately, the goal was canceled out just 5:50 into the third period as the home team struck for its second power-play goal of the night to make it 4-1.

Nearing the midway point of the period, Tafoya nabbed back-to-back goals himself, finishing the pair just 42 seconds apart. First, he scored on a power play at 9:35 of the period with help from seniors Conner Enciso and Zach Simpson. Then, just moments later, he tucked in his second goal at 10:17. Wagner and senior Chris Hinrichs earned assists on the play.

MSOE continue to push for the equalizer to no avail The team played the final 90 seconds with an empty net but the extra attacker did not yield a shot on target to threaten the CUW goalie.

The Raiders handily outshot the Falcons 36-18 in the game and had nine power play opportunities, scoring on two of them. Meanwhile, CUW was 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

Senior Zach Woodman made 14 saves on the night.

MSOE returns to the ice next weekend with a divisional road trip to close out the regular season at Adrian Friday and Trine Saturday.
