Hockey Clinches Playoff Berth with 4-1 Win

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Garrett Gintoli scored twice to lead the MSOE hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Trine Friday night at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (8-11-4, 6-7-3 NCHA) punched their ticket for the Harris Cup Playoffs with the victory while ending the postseason hopes of the Thunder (9-12-2, 5-10-1 NCHA) in the process.

The result also puts MSOE into a tie with Aurora for the NCHA South Division's No. 3 seed. The Red & White concede the tiebreaker to the Spartans, so will need to get a better result in the regular season finale Saturday when the Raiders host No. 10 Adrian.

Gintoli posted a multi-goal game for the second-straight Friday while sophomores Chandler Watson and Will Gauthier also lit the lamp. Sophomore Jeff Makowski notched a pair of assists in the game for the Red & White.

Watson opened the scoring midway through the opening period, scoring a rebound goal at 9:56. Gauthier assisted on the goal as MSOE led 1-0 after one period.

Gintoli then wasted very little time after the intermission to get his first goal on a power play. MSOE started the period with the man advantage after a five-minute major assessed to Trine after the opening period horn. Makowski set up the goal and Gintoli finished with just 29 seconds past.

The Thunder pulled a goal back, capitalizing on a Raider major penalty to make it 2-1 at 9:46.

Another quick Gintoli score then re-established the two-goal advantage after just 19 seconds. Makowski was once again involved, setting up Gintoli's short-handed score to make it 3-1.

The score remained at 3-1 until the closing seconds when Trine pulled its goal. The net was empty at 1:44 and, after an icing call and the ensuing face-off, junior Kevin Shand forced a turnover just inside the blue line. He carried it through the neutral zone and found Gauthier ahead of his defender for the empty-net tap-in with 1:05 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Rock Boynton made 23 saves in the gave to secure the victory.

Both teams took 24 shots in the game and finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
