Raiders Fall For First Time In 2021

Box Score

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Raiders hockey team came into their NCHA opener riding high on a four-game winning streak but knew they were in for a tough test against Trine with the first points of the season up for grabs. Unfortunately, they were only able to come away with one as they fell in overtime to the Thunder 3-2.

FINAL SCORE (IN OVERTIME)
MSOE RAIDERS – 2
Trine – 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
Everything was going right for MSOE (4-1-0, 0-1-0 NCHA South) to start off the game in northeastern Indiana. Garrett Gintoli continued his hot streak with his fourth goal of the season to kick off the scoring just over seven minutes into the contest. Christian Sabin followed up ten minutes later with a power play tally with Gintoli and Jack Nickels on the assisting end. But that would be it for the Raiders scoring on the evening. Trine (2-4-0, 1-0-0 NCHA South) tied up the game with two goals in the second and thanks to a scoreless third, the game was destined to be the first ever NCHA game with the new overtime rules in place. A five minute three-on-three extra frame would occur, and a shootout would follow if the score was still knotted up, but an MSOE turnover set up the Trine breakaway game winner with just two seconds left to send the Raiders to their first defeat this season.

RAIDER REMARKS

  • The Raiders had a season low 21 shots in the game and never had a period where they got into the double digits in that category.
  • Christian Sabin's extra man goal extended the Raiders power play streak up to four straight games.
