Weekend Battle Starts With Raiders Win

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – MSOE men's hockey couldn't focus on getting good deals on Black Friday as all their attention had to be directed to the visiting St. John's Johnnies who came to town for the first of their two game weekend series. The Raiders went blow for blow with SJU and notched a late third period goal to take home a hard fought 3-2 win inside the Kern Center.

FINAL SCORE
Saint John's – 2
MSOE RAIDERS – 3

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MSOE (6-2, 3-1 NCHA) knew that they were in for a physical, high paced game when Saint John's (4-3-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) came to town. Thankfully, the Raiders were able to set the tone and scored first to take a 1-0 lead on a Stuart Harley goal from Matt Hanewall and Christian Sabin. The Raiders increased their advantage to two 55 seconds later when Sabin netted a power play goal from Kyle Herbster and Gramm McCormack with one tick left on the clock before the first intermission.
  • Unfortunately, that 2-0 lead would be erased in the second frame. The Johnnies scored twice, once with the extra man, and forced MSOE to enter the final stanza tied at 2-2.
  • The Red & White got the last laugh though. It seemed like the game was destined for overtime until McCormack and Preston Park set up Jackson Hughes for the game winning goal with 2:05 left to play. The Raiders then survived nearly two minutes of empty net action after that to hold on to a big 3-2 win on Friday night.

RAIDER REMARKS

  • The Raiders have now gone three straight games without a loss against the Johnnies and are 3-2-1 in the all-time series that began back in 2004.
  • It wasn't just the swarm of shoppers that saved big today. Goaltender Austin Schwab stopped 36 pucks in the winning effort.
