CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The MSOE rowing team had some strong finishes throughout five entries at Saturday's Head of the Hooch regatta as they wrapped up their 2022 fall schedule.
"Overall, it was a really great weekend for the entire team. Our crews delt with some challenging conditions but raced with composure and poise," said women's head coach Marissa Castello. "Head of the Hooch is always an awesome regatta with deep fields, allowing us to showcase all of the hard work our athletes have put in this fall."
The Raiders first event of the day was the Men's Collegiate 4+. MSOE fielded two entries placing eighth and 32nd respectively out of a massive field of 46 boats. The "A" boat comprised of Owen Podziemski (coxswain), Patrick Hayes, Finn Dreyer, Trey Miller, and Ian Wright posted a time of 15:58 while the "B" boat fielded by Deepansh Agarwal (coxswain), Aidan Roth, Zach Hatseras, Thomas Nord, and Wesley Salverson crossed the finish line with a time of 17:44.
In the Women's Collegiate 8+ race that followed, MSOE's crew posted a time of 18:56 which was good for 14th place out of 22 crews. The lineup included Nicole Harris (coxswain), Monique Landry, Sabrina Lutz, Elise McMahon, Tiffany Dabrowski, Polina Vyucheiskaia, Katerina Flierl, Annika West, and Veronica Skinner. The crew delt with incredibly difficult conditions through the first half of the 4,500 meter course with white caps and winds drastically impacting times on the water.
The MSOE Men's team also fielded a boat in the Men's Collegiate 8+ event. The boat helmed by Podziemski (coxswain), Salverson, Wright, Miller, Dreyer, Hayes, Hatseras, Roth, and Agarwal placed 15th out of 25 crews with a time of 16:03.
In rounding out the day of competition, the ladies of the Red & White competed in the Women's Collegiate 4+ event with an entry fielded by Harris (coxswain), Landry, Lutz, McMahon, and Skinner. The crew was able to execute a successful race plan with some improved conditions and finished 28th out of a total of 44 crews with a time of 20:15.
"I'm very proud of the progress the ladies and the men have made from the Head of the Rock to this race but even more so from last year at this time," said head men's coach Chuck Stollenwerk. "This is a wonderful group of people to work with and great thanks to our assistant and women's coach Marissa Castello as well as the loyal group of volunteers we have on our staff."
