Box Score 2 CINCINNATI - Senior Nick Manning had 13 kills in each match to lead the MSOE men's volleyball team to a pair of victories over Lakeland and Marymount Saturday afternoon at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational.
The Raiders (5-1) have now won five-straight matches and already surpassed last season's win total. They opened their day with a come-from-behind victory over the Muskies (0-1) 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 18-16.
Then, MSOE posted a three-set sweep of the Saints (1-2) 25-21, 25-22, 25-17.
Against Lakeland, the Raiders had two rebound from an 0-2 deficit in the match, hitting .348 to take the third set, before limiting the Muskies to -.031 attacking in set four. The final set was the closest, as the teams both hit in the .290's and the Red & White was forced to go to extra points to close out the match.
In addition to Manning, the Raiders also got 12 points from sophomore Joe Humpal and posted a season-best 13 total blocks as a team.
The victory had an added bonus, as Lakeland is a conference foe in the new MCVL and defeated MSOE three times last season, each by a 3-0 score.
Buoyed by the victory, the Raiders came back in their second match and swept past the Saints. Manning attacked at a .360 clip as the team hit above .200 (.222) for the fourth time in six matches this season and posted season lows for both attacking and services errors.
Junior Brett Herbers had a strong day, finishing with 14 kills in the two matches. He hit at least .500 in each match and finished with a .524 attack percentage for the day.
The MSJ Invitational continues Sunday, with the Raiders playing Medaille and the host Lions.
