Box Score MILWAUKEE – Senior Leah Hendricks tallied 17 kills and 18 digs as the MSOE women's volleyball team pushed defending conference champion Dominican to five sets before falling, 13-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-13, 15-10 Friday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (11-14, 2-8 NACC) started off strong by winning the first two sets, but could not recover after the Stars (21-7, 9-1 NACC) claimed a hard-fought third set.
Junior Rachel Lynde added 10 kills, while freshman Hannah Pekarek finished with seven kills and 15 digs. Junior Sarabeth Haworth tallied 24 digs in the match to surpass 1,000 for her career.
Rosalyn Wyse led Dominican with a match-best 24 kills and Alex Kisten chipped in 18.
The Raiders fed off an energetic crowd in a dominating first-set performance, limiting the Stars to -.108 hitting. They scored the first five points of the frame, then had a pair of three-point runs before another 5-0 stretch made it 21-9. The lead would peak at 24-11 as the Red & White rolled to a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second game started much like the first, with MSOE jumping out to an 8-1 lead following a 6-0 run. Another four-point spurt made it 14-6 for the Raiders and their lead grew to nine at 16-7. The lead was still eight points when Dominican started to pull back. The visitors rattled off an 11-3 run to overtake the Red & White at 25-24. The Raiders fought off three set points before closing on a 3-0 run to take the game.
Dominican rallied to even the match at 2-2, winning a hard-fought third game and using an early 9-0 run to pull away in the fourth. The Stars had a slight advantage in the final set before a 4-0 run gave them some breathing room as they slowly pulled away down the stretch.
MSOE hit at a .176 clip for the night with 50 kills against just 19 errors. DU rebounded from the first two sets to hit .350, .286 and .400 over the final three frames and finish the night at .182. It also stymied the Red & White attack a bit with 98 digs in the match.
The Raiders close out conference play Saturday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
