Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Freshman Neil Naughton had 12 kills, including the match-ending point, to lead the MSOE men's volleyball team to a four-set victory over No. 3 Kean 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 Saturday afternoon in the final match of a home triangular at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (13-9, 4-5 MCVL) opened the day downing the conference-rival Muskies (12-13, 5-4 MCVL) 25-13, 17-25, 28-30, 25-16, 15-9 in dramatic fashion, after trailing two sets to one.
Senior Nick Manning and sophomore Logan Baerenwald added nine kills apiece, with Manning adding 11 digs. Freshman Bryant Holland finished with four service aces.
Ed Jedziniak paced Kean with 13 kills, eight digs and eight total blocks.
After dropping the first set, the Raiders won back-to-back tight frames to take a 2-1 lead. The second set was within three points nearly the entire period, before the Red & White broke a 20-20 tie with five-straight points to close out the set.
Then, in the third, MSOE limited the Cougars to just -.051 attacking to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The home team staged an early 4-0 run to overcome a 10-9 deficit. The home team added another 5-0 stretch to break and 13-13 tie and never looked back.
It was an early 6-0 run that had the Raiders playing ahead in the final frame. Kean did not back down, tying the set at 12-12 and 13-13, but MSOE responded with a 6-1 spurt for a 19-14 advantage. It then held off any attempts by the visitors and closed the match out with four of the last five points.
The Red & White did well to keep the Cougars off balance the entire match, limiting them to just a .041 attack percentage for the match. The team finished with 47 digs and 6.5 team blocks.
Naughton also led the way against the Muskies with 16 kills and seven total blocks, while attacking at a .481 clip. Manning was one of two players with double-doubles, notching 15 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Joe Humpal and Holland had 10 kills each, with Holland also tallying 13 digs and four aces.
Matt Stolz notched a match-best 19 kills for Lakeland. Alec Redlich added 12.
The Raiders came out of the gates hot against LC, building big early leads in each of the sets they won. In the first, it was 9-3 as they remained ahead 16-10. They then rattled off five-straight points for a 21-10 advantage. The Red & White then closed the opening set out with a 4-0 run.
The Muskies bounced back to hit .500 to win the second set, while the third set was back-and-forth down to the wire. Each team led by as many as three in the frame. It was Lakeland leading 24-22, but the Raiders rattled off three-straight points to take the lead and force extra points.
The Raiders scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth set and led later by seven at 17-10. It was 21-16 when three quick points put MSOE in the driver's seat to equal the match at 2-2. In the decisive set, it was all Red & White, as the home team built another early lead and never looked back.
MSOE outhit LC .237 to .170 and had a 61-55 advantage in kills. The Red & White block also finished with 11 total blocks.
After playing the third-ranked team in the country today, the Raiders will host No. 4 SUNY New Paltz Tuesday at 7 p.m.
