#15 Raiders Come Up Short Against #3 New Paltz

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The 15th-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team pushed No. 3 SUNY New Paltz for four sets, but could not force a fifth in falling 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 30-28, late Tuesday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (13-10), which was coming off a win over the previous No. 3-ranked team last Saturday, pushed the Hawks (15-3), but came up just short this time out.

Senior Nick Manning led MSOE with a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Bryant Holland added 10 kills, while freshman Quin Krisik had 33 assists and 10 digs.

New Paltz had four different players tally double-digits in kills, with Andy Fishman heading the list with 14. Christian Smith and Anthony Bonilla had 13 apiece and Husmann had 10.

The Raiders claimed the opening set after taking the lead early and playing from the lead for much of the frame. They led 17-15 before rattling off three-straight points to get some breathing room. The Red & White then closed out the set with back-to-back backs, culminating with a Holland ace.

MSOE looked to be following the same formula in the second set, leading throughout the early stages. It led finally at 13-12, but New Paltz rattled off five-straight points to seize control of the set and never looked back. The visitors then used an early 11-2 run to take jump out to a 14-4 lead and were not threatened.

In the decisive fourth set, the Raiders would not back down, fighting back from a late 23-18 deficit. The set was tied at 13-13 when New Paltz went on a 5-1 run, but MSOE responded with three-straight points to pull back within 18-17.

The Hawks then had another 5-1 run to open its 23-18 lead. The home team then scored six-straight points for the first of four set points at 24-23. It just couldn't close out the frame, as New Paltz took the set and the match with a 30-28 win in the fourth.

The match featured two of the three top teams in the nation in kills per set. Third-ranked MSOE hit .160 in the match with 41 kills on 125 attacks and just 21 errors. The Hawks, which lead the nation, notched 62 kills against 24 errors on 139 attacks for a .273 percentage.

The Raiders return to action Wednesday night, hosting a third-straight ranked opponent in No. 12 Dominican.
