Raiders Edge Cardinal Stritch in Five Sets

Box Score

UPDATE: MSOE forfeited this match due to use of an ineligible student-athlete

GLENDALE, Wis. – Junior Scott Boyk tallied 15 kills and junior Joe Humpal had 13 as the MSOE men's volleyball team prevailed in a five-set thriller over Cardinal Stritch, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13, Tuesday evening on the road.

The Raiders (3-0) and Wolves (1-3) alternated tightly-contested sets all night, with the Red & White prevailing in the end.

MSOE did not have its most efficient night on the attack with a .190 hitting percentage, but got the job done behind Boyk and Humpal on the attack and a stout defense. It limited CSU to .158 attacking and finished with 10.0 total blocks. Boyk and sophomore Quin Krisik had two solo blocks and three total each, while sophomore Neil Naughton added three total blocks, as well.

Krisik finished with 41 assists and added five kills on six attacks on the night.

Scott Fabian led Stritch with 15 kills and a .440 attacking clip, while Connor O'Ryan had 11 kills.

All five sets were tight affairs, with the Raiders getting the first set with a late 4-0 run. The stretch came with them leading 4-0 and provided some breathing room. They then closed the frame with three-straight points. The Wolves rebounded to take the second set, using an 8-0 run to overcome a 10-5 deficit and take control of the set.

MSOE turned the tables in the third game, overcoming an early 7-2 hole with a 12-2 run on its way to a 2-1 lead in the match. Once again, Stritch came back to edge the Red & White in the fourth and force a fifth set.

True to form, the final frame was close throughout with some back-to-back points allowing the Raiders to play from ahead and Humpal clinched the game with a kill.

Head coach Shane Reid has MSOE off to a 3-0 start this season in his first campaign leading the program. He'll look to extend the hot start this weekend with three matches at the Wittenberg Invitational. The first match is Friday at 5 p.m. central time against Cal Lutheran.
