Men's Volleyball Hooks Muskies In Sweep

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball team hit a season-best .349 with a pair of sets over .400 on its way to a three-game sweep of Lakeland, 34-32, 25-16, 25-21, Friday night at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (2-1, 2-0 MCVL) picked up its second-straight league sweep this week, this time at the expense of the Muskies (2-3, 0-1 MCVL).

Senior Scott Boyk tallied 12 kills and hit .333 to lead MSOE. Senior Joe Humpal had nine kills and a .500 attack percentage, while juniors Neil Naughton and Sam Stealey had eight kills apiece. Junior Quin Krisik finished with 46 assists, four kills, three service aces and a match-high nine digs.

Matt Stolz led Lakeland with 13 kills and Casey Bolda added nine.

The opening set was a marathon for both teams, with the Raiders rebounding from a 24-22 deficit to force extra points. In all, they fended off five set points before turning the tide on the Muskies. The visitors then faced five set points before the Red & White could close out the frame.

Lakeland played from ahead early in the second set, as well, but MSOE was able to turn an 11-10 deficit into an 18-13 lead with an 8-2 run. After LU claimed the next two points, the Raiders finished the set on a 7-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. They hit .400 in the game.

Despite a .482 to .182 hitting discrepancy in favor of the Red & White, the third set was played tight nearly the whole time. The score was tied for the last time at 18-18 when back-to-back Lakeland attack errors and a Humpal ace quickly made it 21-18. The Raiders would then take three of the final four points to win the match.

With such a strong finish, MSOE was able to put together its most efficient offensive performance of the early season with 55 kills against just 18 errors in 106 attacks. The Muskies hit just .135 on the night with just 29 kills.

The Raiders return to the court next Sunday at Loras.
