#14 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Marian to Clinch Post-Season Bid

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – The No. 14 MSOE men's volleyball team hit .379 as a team and clinched a spot in the 2017 MCVL Tournament with a 25-15, 25-12, 34-32 sweep of Marian Saturday afternoon at Sadoff Gym.

After grinding out a defensive sweep of Lakeland Friday, the Raiders (17-3, 13-2 MCVL) found its offense hitting on all cylinders in a decisive sweep of the Sabres (8-14, 5-10 MCVL).

Senior Joe Humpal hit .536 and finished with a match-high 17 kills to lead the way. Senior Scott Boyk added 12 kills of his own as MSOE tallied 45 kills over the three sets against just nine errors.

Jon Sattersten and Jon Smallpage each had seven kills for Marian.

The Raiders hit .407 in the first set with just two errors to get off to a strong start. They jumped ahead early and had built a 12-6 lead after a 5-1 run. The lead wavered in that area until the Red & White expanded on an 18-13 lead with a 7-2 run to close out the set.

As strong as MSOE was in the first game, it only got better in the second with just one error and a .556 attacking percentage. The team started strong and just continued to pull away throughout the set, capitalizing on five-straight points at the midway point and ending on a 9-3 run.

The Sabres did not go down easily, stepping up and challenging the Raiders in the third set. There were 26 ties in the frame, with the home team playing from ahead at times with its first leads of the match. Marian had the first game point at 24-23 but MSOE quickly overtook the advantage forcing MU to defend eight match points before succumbing at 34-32 on a kill by freshman Jake Christensen and a block by Christensen and junior Caleb Schober.

The Raiders held Lakeland to a negative hitting percentage Friday night and kept its defensive intensity up by holding the Sabres to just .032. They did not match the 83 digs of the night before but tallied 38 and saw MU commit 24 errors.

MSOE continues a four-match road stretch next weekend with a league swing through Michigan. The trip begins Friday at Olivet and continues Saturday morning at Adrian.
