Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball team struggled to get its offense on track in falling to No. 3 Carthage 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
Despite hitting just .039 for the match, the Raiders (3-3) hung with the undefeated Red Men (12-0) throughout each set but was unable to take a frame from the visitors.
Senior Logan Baerenwald finished with a team-high 10 kills. Senior Sam Stealey added six and sophomore Spencer Mueller chipped in five.
Carthage was led by Evan Walsh's 11 kills. Mason Moore finished with 10.
MSOE was in each game but could not keep up with the visitors. In the opener, the Red Men led 13-12 before rattling off a 7-2 run to pull away. Then, in game two, they scored 6-of-7 points to break a 4-4 tie. The Raiders fought back within three points late at 19-16 and 22-16 but could get no closer.
In game three, MSOE got off to a strong start with an early 5-3 lead before a 7-2 run gave Carthage a 10-7 lead. The Red & White fought back to tie the score at 14-14 but the Red Men slowly pulled away down the stretch to claim the match.
The Raiders, which entered the week ranked in the top five in kills per set, was limited to a season-low 30 kills in the match. Carthage was a bit better with 37 kills on .158 attacking, its second-lowest hitting rate of the season.
Sophomore Danny Martens led the back-row defense with 11 digs while senior Neil Naughton logged four blocks up front and sophomore Jake Christensen had three.
MSOE returns to action with a third-straight match against a ranked opponent at No. 9 Benedictine Thursday.
