Box Score LISLE, Illinois – Four players tallied 10-or-more kills and the MSOE men's volleyball team rallied from down 2-0 to defeat No. 10 Benedictine 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 31-29, 15-12 Thursday night at the Rice Center.
Playing a third-straight ranked opponent, the Raiders (4-3, 3-1 NACC) faced a 20-12 deficit while trailing 2-1 in game four before storming past the Eagles (8-4, 3-1 NACC) in a five-set thriller.
Senior Bryant Holland led the charge with 13 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Spencer Mueller had 11 kills while senior Neil Naughton and sophomore Jake Christensen had 10 kills each. Naughton also had a team-high six blocks and Mueller had four.
Sophomore Danny Martens tied a career-high with 23 kills, which is tied for second-most in a match in program history and senior Andrew Miller directed the offense with 52 assists, adding six kills and four blocks.
Adriel Rivas had 26 kills to lead Benedictine. Nick Malak chipped in 10.
MSOE jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening game just to see BenU counter with a 10-4 run of its own. The teams battled to a 20-20 tie before the home team forged a slight edge at the end for the win. The Eagles then never trailed in the second game but were never allowed to pull away until a slight 3-0 run gave them the room they needed to open a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Raiders rallied to take the third set, capitalizing on a pair of 3-0 runs and a 5-1 stretch to get back in the match. The fourth set, though, was the highlight of the night as MSOE faced a 20-12 deficit before rattling off nine-straight points to take a 21-20 lead. The teams then went back-and-forth into extra points with the teams combining to fight off seven set points. The Raiders' fourth game point proved to be the one and Holland capped the thriller with a kill.
It was another tight game in the fifth before the Red & White took the lead with three-straight points to pull ahead 12-9. The home side tried to play catch-up but MSOE answered point-for-point with Miller getting the match-deciding kill.
The Raiders hit .230 on the night with 63 kills to go with seven service aces and 11.0 total blocks. Meanwhile, BenU hit .207 as a team with 53 kills and six aces.
MSOE is back in action Saturday, hosting Aurora.
