Box Score MILWAUKEE - Senior Bryant Holland finished with 12 kills and sophomore Spencer Mueller had eight blocks to lead the MSOE men's volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Aurora Saturday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (5-3, 4-1 NACC) needed just 32 kills, their second-lowest total of the season, in sweeping past the Spartans (8-3, 3-2 NACC) in the first-ever meeting against the first-year program.
Holland was the only MSOE player with over five kills as seniors Sam Stealey and Andrew Miller notched five kills each. Meanwhile, Mueller's eight total blocks, which included one solo block, are tied for the fifth-most in a match in team history.
Tim Breiter had a match-high 13 kills for Aurora, which tallied 42 kills in the match. Tyler Turner added 11 kills on the night.
Each of the games was close for the most part, with the Raiders showing their experience to get past the all-freshman Spartans. In the opening set, the Red & White erased a 10-8 deficit with eight-straight points and closed out the frame on a 5-2 run.
Then, in game two, MSOE broke a 6-6 tie with five straight points and tallied another five-point run later to open a 20-12 lead. AU battled back with an 8-3 run to pull within two at the end before a block capped the game for the Raiders.
It was another tight affair in the final game when MSOE slipped ahead with a late 3-0 run for breathing room. The team then notched three of the final four points of the night to complete the sweep.
The Raiders hit .142 for the night, adding five service aces and 10 total blocks. They committed just three service errors in the match, a stark contrast to the 25 they had two nights previous at Benedictine. Aurora hit .115 in the match.
MSOE returns to action with four matches next week, starting Wednesday night against Lakeland.
