Box Score MILWAUKEE – Three players tallied double-digit kills as the MSOE men's volleyball team efficiently swept past Lakeland, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19, in the NACC Tournament First Round Tuesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (14-11) now advance to the semifinals to take on No. 9 Benedictine on Thursday.
Senior Logan Baerenwald led the way with 11 kills while senior Sam Stealey and sophomore Jake Christensen had 10 kills each. Senior Andrew Miller had 35 assists in the match and sophomore Danny Martens notched 12 digs to hit 300 digs this season, the first player in program history to the milestone.
Dakota Hunter led Lakeland (9-20) with 10 kills on the night.
After splitting the two meetings in the regular season, the match started out tight before MSOE took control. The Muskies led 11-8 early in the first game before an 8-3 run gave the Red & White a 16-14 advantage. The score was later tied at 21-21 before the Baerenwald sparked a game-ending four-point run. He tallied a pair of kills and teamed on a block to propel his team to the opening victory.
The momentum carried over into the second set as the Raiders jumped out to a 12-5 lead. The visitors would get no closer than four points until the final points when they fended off three-straight game points. Then, in the fourth game, the Red & White reversed an 8-7 deficit with six-straight points as part of an extended 12-4 run in which the team never looked back in booking its ticket to the semifinals.
MSOE hit .276 on the night with 42 kills, adding six service aces in the process. Meanwhile, Lakeland finished at .133 with 27 kills. The Raiders did not have a single receiving error and the match featured just two total blocks, one for each team.
