#6 Volleyball Drops First Two Matches Of Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Saturday afternoon saw No. 6 MSOE men's volleyball complete three games in two days as they competed in their first tri-match of the season against Cal Lutheran and NACC foe No. 12 Dominican. Things did not go the Raiders way however, as their service game was off once again. Other issues popped up as well, sending the Red & White to their first two defeats of the 2020 season.

RESULTS
Cal Lutheran – 3 (25, 25, 25)
#6 MSOE – 0 (23, 21, 23)

#6 MSOE – 0 (12, 21, 23)
#12 Dominican – 3 (25, 25, 25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
First up was Cal Lutheran (6-9, 0-0 DIII Independent) in a neutral court match. No. 6 MSOE (6-2, 0-0 NACC) played the Kingsmen close, scoring at least 21 points in each set. Unfortunately, the Raiders just couldn't get a handle on their miscues. The Red & White committed 13 errors on the attacking end, though they still hit .293 in the match. But it was their serving that hurt worse. MSOE was charged with 14 service errors compared to just one ace. Ben Pung had an impressive match with 15 kills, four digs, and a .393 attack percentage but it wasn't enough to salvage the Raiders first matchup of the afternoon.

The second contest featured a rematch of the 2019 NACC tournament championship game. No. 12 Dominican (7-0, 2-0 NACC) clearly had revenge on their mind, thrashing the Raiders in a first set where they lost 25-12. Once again errors were prevalent, with 18 errors coming on the attack while 17 were committed on the serve. The Red & White had at least five errors in each set as they paced themselves to just a .174 hitting percentage. MSOE tried to rally back in the second and third game of the match behind Austyn Bella's 14 kills and Kalvin Fellows 29 assists, but it was too little too late to stop the second straight set loss of the day in a non-conference match against the Stars.

WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders will play in another triangular this upcoming Friday just down the road from the Kern Center. MSOE will take on host Cardinal Stritch at 1:30 pm before facing off against Mt. Mercy in a neutral site matchup at 4:00 pm.
