Raiders Split Tri-Match To Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GLENDALE, Wis. – MSOE men's volleyball opened up their 2023 season with a home tri-match and looked to set the tone for the campaign ahead. The Raiders made quick work of Augustana in the day's first match, but errors cost them a chance at upsetting nationally ranked No. 7 SUNY New Paltz as the day concluded at Nicolet High School.

RESULTS
Augustana – 1 (13, 25, 16, 13)
MSOE RAIDERS – 3 (25, 23, 25, 25)

No. 7 SUNY New Paltz – 3 (25, 26, 21, 25)
MSOE RAIDERS – 1 (20, 24, 25, 19)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • vs. Augustana
    • MSOE (1-1) opened up their new season with a battle against midwest foe Augustana (0-2). The Red & White had their offense in full gear in the first set where they hit .500 off of 12 kills which allowed them to cruise to a 25-13 victory. In fact, the only frame that the Raiders didn't have a dozen attack points was the third where they had 11.
    • The only blemish against the Vikings came in the second stanza, one that saw MSOE commit six service errors and seven on the attack in a 25-23 loss. The back half of the match went much smoother though with wins of 25-16 and 25-13.
    • Carter Shavitz led all players with 17 kills in 26 total attacks (.577) and Nick Stachura helped out with 33 assists.
  • vs. No. 7 SUNY New Paltz
    • Unfortunately, it was a reversal of fortunes in their match against the seventh best team in the land. After a 25-20 No. 7 SUNY New Paltz (5-1) win in the first set, it looked like the Raiders might break through in the second but they couldn't close the door. Up 22-19, the Hawks came back to tie things up before taking the set win 26-24.
    • The Red & White rebounded with their first win in the third (25-21), due in part to 11 errors on SUNY's attack, but they could only manage six kills in the decisive 25-19 loss in the fourth to drop the match 3-1.
    • Ted Simpson and Shavitz were tied for the team lead with 14 kills each while Tommy Clausz had six block assists.

WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders will be back in action ten days from now when they have their first road match of the season. They'll take on No. 6 North Central in Naperville on January 31st at 7:00 pm.
