2024-25 Moments of the Year (No. 7): Men's Hockey Upsets #6 St Norbert

MILWAUKEE – Throughout the month of July, Raider Athletics will look back on the Top 10 moments of the 2024-25 seasons.  Clocking in at #7 is MSOE Men's Hockey's upset of St. Norbert College on January 26th.  The Raiders knocked off the then #6 Green Knights by a score of 4-2 in De Pere, as the Red and White came back from being down 2-0 and registered four goals in an explosive third period.

MSOE was looking to make a statement early as they controlled things on their offensive end early on, firing seven shots in which four were on net and saved in the first three minutes. St. Norbert took control from there as the first period was silent until just before the buzzer sounded, as they scored with the clock running out to go into the first break with an unexpected 1-0 lead over the Red & White.

In the second period, the Raiders looked to even things with a power-play opportunity midway through. After two shot opportunities late in the power-play, the Green Knights found themselves with a breakaway opportunity to score shorthanded to lead 2-0, heading into the second break with that margin.
Things shifted early and quickly when the third period started as just a minute in, Sam Lyons stole it from his offensive blue-line and sent it to the left side of the net for his first career goal to cut the SNC lead to one. A minute and a half later, Steve Guo found the puck in the middle of a scrum off a faceoff near the net and sent it five-hole for his first career goal as well to tie at two.

The Raiders weren't done there and moved even quicker as just 23 seconds later, Casey Roepke sent one towards the net to Eddie Shepler to send one as just 2:54 into the third, the Raiders had a 3-2 lead and forced the Green Knights to make a change between the pipes. The Green Knights spent the remainder of the game trying to claw their way back, but with 4:41 remaining, Lyons sealed it as he took it off the boards in a breakaway to net his second of the night.

The Raiders close out their season with an overall record of 13-10-4, going 7-8-3 in conference play. The season was highlighted by winning the inaugural Tampa College Hockey Invitational, along with a road victory at #6 St. Norbert College back on January 25th.  Both Seth Bernard and Cole Beilke earned All-NCHA recognition, while the Raiders saw 22 players named to the conference All-Academic team.
