Raiders Prevail in Showdown of NACC Unbeatens

Box Score

LISLE, Ill. – Senior Marius Prestin scored the game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining in the first overtime to send the MSOE men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Benedictine Saturday evening at the Lisle Sport Complex.

The Raiders (11-3, 5-0 NACC) and Eagles (6-6-1, 5-1 NACC) were the last two unbeaten teams in the NACC. BenU and Dominican are now the only two teams with just one loss.

Junior Logan Andryk assisted on both goals, pushing his season total to 19 and tying the conference single-season record set by Dominican's Matt Kochanowski in 2007. Andryk has led the nation in the category for most of the season and long ago had broken the program record of 11.

Prestin's score came in the waning seconds of the first overtime period. MSOE rushed to get one last chance for the golden goal after an Eagle foul. Andryk sent his free kick into the box and Prestin put it away to give the Raiders the victory.

MSOE played with the lead for much of the match, getting on the board on junior Jerry Rubio's third goal of the season in the 21st minute on a corner kick. Andryk sent a pass towards the front of the goal mouth, but Rubio met the cross at the near post and poked it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders looked for that goal to hold up, but it was not meant to be as Benedictine knotted the score at 1-1 in the 79th minute. Edgar Reyes sent a corner kick Nick Kapetanos' way and the team's leading scorer found the back of the net from the right edge of the penalty area.

Senior Garrett Farin made eight saves in goal for MSOE to get the win. He also benefited from some help on defense, with a team save on a header in the 67th minute. His counterpart, Steve Mack, stopped five shots in the match.

Both teams took 18 shots on the night in a physical contest that saw 43 fouls called, including 24 against the Raiders. The visitors also took six of the match's 10 corner kicks.

MSOE returns to action Wednesday, playing at Aurora.
