Raider Rally Falls Short Against Alma

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The MSOE lacrosse team played its closest game of the season, pulling within two goals late, but ultimately fell to Alma 9-7 Sunday afternoon at Viets Field.

The Raiders (0-6) struck for five goals in the fourth quarter, but could not catch the Scots (5-5) in the end.

Junior Zachary Dawiec notched his season, and the team's third, hat trick of the season with three goals. Junior Brent Finnegan also got on the scoresheet twice and had an assisted, while freshman Andrew Clemens scored one goal and assisted on two others.

Kyle Schnitzer led Alma with four goals. Isiah Colmore picked up two of his own.

The Scots got the scoring started with a pair of goals in the first quarter. Dawiec halved that lead off an assist from junior Aaron Chun to make it 2-1 after one quarter. Alma would add two more scores in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

After the teams traded goals in the third quarter to make it a 5-2 game, they combined on nine goals in the final frame.

Finnegan struck first two pull his side within two less than two minutes into the period. The Scots answered with three-straight goals in a 2:16 span to make it 8-3.

The Raiders quickly responded with three goals of their own over 2:35 to stay in the game at 8-6. Alma got another goal with 2:56 remaining, but MSOE kept pushing and found a seventh goal with just under a minute to play.

It was a tight game, that saw the visitors hold a 35-23 shot advantage. Junior Adam Kocsis made three saves. In the field, junior Maxwell Wasscher and sophomore Adam Woytcke led the defensive efforts. Wasscher caused eight turnovers and had five ground balls. Woytcke finished with seven of each.

The nine goals conceded by MSOE marked the fewest the Raiders had allowed since beating the Scots 10-2 April 29, 2012, for the program's only win to date. It is also the third fewest the team has ever allowed in a game. Meanwhile, the seven goals are the fifth-most in a game for the Red and White.

MSOE returns to the field and conference play Wednesday, hosting MLC foe Augustana at Viets Field.
