Box Score 2 CINCINNATI – The MSOE men's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to seven matches and closed out the Mount St. Joseph Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating Medaille and the host Lions in a pair of matches Sunday at the Harrington Center.
The Raiders (7-1), who swept a pair of matches at the Benedictine Invitational midweek, downed the Mavericks (0-3) 25-19, 25-17, 25-23, in an early morning match. They then returned to win a back-and-forth match with MSJ (3-2) 22-25, 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 15-12.
Freshman Neil Naughton had an outstanding day, finishing with 10 kills, no errors and a .667 attack percentage against MC. It was already his second match this season with at least 10 kills and no errors. He followed it up with nine kills and seven solo blocks against Mount St. Joseph.
Senior Nick Manning had a team-high 24 kills on the day with 17 against MSJ. Sophomore Joe Humpal tallied 19 on the day with 12 against the Lions.
MSOE got both its offense and defense to click to secure wins on the day, hitting .325 in sweeping past Medaille. The Raiders opened by hitting .417 in the first set and closed out the match with a .300 attack percentage in the final frame. It was their second-straight sweep.
Against the hosts, the defense took center stage. The Red & White held MSJ to negative hitting in each of the three sets it won. The Lions were limited to just .068 percent attacking over the five sets. In addition to Naughton's blocking prowess in the match, MSOE also got 16 digs from senior libero Adam Vlaj.
After opening the season with eight matches in nine days, the Raiders will get a much-needed break. They return to action Feb. 6, opening MCVL play against Fontbonne at the Kern Center.
