Raiders Advance to NACC Title Game in PK Shootout

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Senior Logan Andryk scored two goals and assisted on another as the MSOE men's soccer team got past Aurora in a penalty kick shootout Tuesday evening at Viets Field to advance to the NACC Championship game for the second-straight season.

The Raiders (13-4-1) and Spartans (10-7-3) played to a 3-3 draw through two overtimes, but MSOE converted all five penalty kicks in the ensuing shooting to emerge victorious 5-3. It now hosts No. 4 Dominican Saturday at noon in a rematch of the last year's title match.

In the penalty kick shootout, Andryk, sophomore Braden Andryk, senior Mike Skow and sophomore Sean Tabbert each converted their spot kicks, while Aurora missed its first and was successful on its subsequent three attempts. With a 4-3 advantage, senior Daniel Frey scored the decisive penalty kick to secure the win.

Logan Andryk got the scoring started in the first half with a dynamic run to goal in the 22nd minute, putting the Raiders ahead 1-0.

Aurora would net the equalizer just 97 into the second half, then pull ahead to start a flurry of three goals in the match in a 5:45 span. After Aurora pulled ahead in the 53rd minute, Tabbert leveled the game at 2-2 just under two minutes later. Unfortunately, the Spartans nabbed another scored in the 58th minute to take a 3-2 lead.

Despite the Raiders' pushing forward for another equalizer the AU defense held strong until the waning minutes of regulation.

In the 87th minute, sophomore Mikey Perez was taken down as he charged towards the penalty area and was awarded a free kick from 22 yards out. Andryk stepped up to take the set piece and blasted a low, driving shot inside the far post to tie the score once again.

MSOE carried that momentum through the remainder of regulation and the start of the overtime. In the first extra period, the Red & White pressured Aurora non-stop, earning six corner kicks in the first five minutes of the frame and finishing with a 5-0 shot advantage in the overtime.

Play leveled out some in the second overtime, with neither team able to net the golden goal, sending the game to the shootout.

The Raiders finished with a 28-14 shot advantage in the match and 12-5 edge in corner kicks. Junior Sean Stelter made the start in goal and stopped four shots on the night. Meanwhile, Zach McFarland was called on for 13 saves for the Spartans. Both keepers benefited from a team save.

Also in the match, Andryk became MSOE's all-time leading goal-scorer and tied the school record with his 55th point this season. He now has 59 career goals, pushing past Jeff Stoxen's school record of 58. His 55 points this season matches Jordan Werner's total from 2012.
