Box Score BELOIT, Wis. – The MSOE lacrosse team pulled within one at 7-6 after three quarters, but could not overcome a late surge by Beloit in a 10-7 loss Saturday afternoon at Strong Stadium.
The Raiders (2-3, 1-1 MLC) overcame a 6-3 halftime deficit to pull within one of the Buccaneers (2-3, 1-0 MLC), but the home team pulled away with three goals in the fourth quarter.
Senior Mike Caelwaerts and freshman Thomas Reid scored two goals apiece for MSOE. Freshman Clay Gustafson scored a goal in his fifth-straight game and freshman Oliver Winsor rounded out the scorers.
Aidan Whinnery scored five goals for Beloit.
The Buccaneers opened the game with three-straight goals before Caelwaerts got the Raiders on the board late in the opening quarter to make it 3-1.
After Reid pulled back another goal for the Red & White to open the scoring in the second quarter, but BC rattled off three-straight goals to make it 6-2.
Winsor started the Raider comeback, finding the back of the net with a man advantage 2:02 before halftime.
Beloit made it 7-3, but Gustafson, Caelwaerts and Reid each scored in a span of 2:08 to pull MSOE within one at 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, the Buccaneers scored twice in the first 1:32 of the fourth quarter to pull away and added an insurance goal with 6:37 to cap the scoring.
Freshman Pat Collins made 16 saves in the game, as MSOE improved on the 17-2 score from this contest last season. Freshman Oliver Kennedy had a team-best four ground balls in the game and senior Maxwell Wasscher tallied a pair of caused turnovers.
The Raiders return to action Wednesday evening at Viets Field, hosting Aurora in their home opener. The game gets underway at 6 p.m.
