Box Score MILWAUKEE - The MSOE women's soccer team dominated possession throughout the match, but it took a goal from junior Sara Travia in the 62nd minute to send the Raiders past Maranatha Baptist Tuesday evening at Viets Field.
The Red & White (3-1) outshot the Sabercats (1-1) 21-2 in the match and had a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks, but found goals hard to come by.
Junior Maria Schumacher got the scoring started in the 33rd minute when she bent a corner kick inside the near post, catching the MBU keeper off guard.
The lead would be short-lived as Maranatha capitalized on a Raider foul in the penalty area to draw a penalty kick just 1:15 later. Alison Hernandez stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to knot the game at 1-1.
MSOE ceated problems for the Sabercats with a pressing offense and a conservative defense, limiting the visitors to very few sustained possessions. Unfortunately, the goals did not come and the game went into halftime tied.
The Raiders were revitalized in the second half, but could not break through until Travia netted her first goal of the season. While pressing after a goal kick, Travia created a takaway at the far corner of the box and drilled her shot to the far post to put her side ahead.
That would be all the offense the team needed as MBU was limited to just one shot outside of the penalty kick, a lofted 30-yard attempt on goal. Meanwhile, of the 21 Red & White shots in the match, 10 went on frame.
Junior Sidney Stephens got the start in goal and made one save for the win. Her counterpart, Hannah Anderson, made seven stops and benefited from a team save to keep her team in the game.
The Raiders return to action Saturday at UW-Whitewater.
