Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Clay Gustafson scored seven goals to lead the MSOE lacrosse team to a school-record 22 goals in a 22-0 rout of Carroll Wednesday evening at Viets Field.
The Raiders (3-4) scored nine first-quarter goals on the Pioneers (0-4) and coasted to the largest victory in school history (21 goal margin). It was also their third shutout in program history and first since 2014.
Gustafson's seven goals are the second-most in school history and he had four in the first quarter. Senior Zachary Markell added five goals and sophomore Thomas Reid finished with four goals and two assists on the night.
Markell reached his hat trick by halftime, while Reid's first three goals came in a 1:46 span late in the third quarter.
The 22 goals reset the school record of 20 goals scored two times last season, including at Carroll in the season finale. MSOE also outshot Carroll 71-0 in the game, falling one shot of the school record for shots in a game and holding an opponent without a shot for the first time ever.
After scoring nine times in the first quarter, the Raiders struck for just one goal in the second period. In the third quarter, they scored four times, including twice in seven seconds three times in 40 seconds. During an eight-goal outburst in the fourth quarter, the Red & White netted back-to-back scores just eight seconds apart.
Sophomores Oliver Winsor and Oliver Kennedy had two goals and an assist each, while sophomore Jake Carney and freshman Jack Fisher also scored. Fisher added four assists on the night.
Sophomore Logan Kupferman led the way with seven ground balls, while seniors Mike Pancani and Aaron Chun had six each. Sophomore Connor McGill forced a team-best four turnovers.
MSOE put 41 shots on goal, with John Annand making nine saves in the first quarter. Dakota Hwilka played the final three quarters for Carroll and stopped 13 shots.
The Raiders return to the field and league play Saturday, hosting Beloit.
