Raiders Come Up Short Against Beloit, 12-11

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Jack Fisher scored four goals and sophomore Oliver Kennedy pulled the MSOE lacrosse team within one in the final minute of regulation, but it was not enough as it fell to Beloit, 12-11, Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.

The Raiders (3-5, 0-2 MLC) looked to erase a three-goal deficit over the final six-plus minutes, but the Buccaneers (4-7, 2-2 MLC) escaped with the narrow victory.

Fisher scored his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist and added an assist for his second-straight five-point game. Sophomore Clay Gustafson notched three goals in the game and sophomore Oliver Winsor had two for MSOE.

Liam O'Connor led Beloit with five goals and Mike Spencer had two as the only other player with multiple goals.

O'Connor scored the eventual game-winner with 6:10 remaining in the game, pressing high up the field to force a turnover and score into an empty net. It was his second-straight goal in the match and gave the visitors a 12-9 advantage.

Gustafson answered back reasonably quick at the 4:52 mark, setting up a tense final minute.

As the Raiders pushed forward to get back in the game, sophomore Oliver Kennedy scored with just 41 seconds remaining. Junior Aaron Chun then won the ensuing face-off to set up a potentially tying possession. Then, a Buccaneer penalty gave the Red & White a man-up advantage for the final 20 seconds of regulation.

The opportunity nearly paid off, as sophomore Thomas Reid got a clean bouncing shot off with eight seconds to go. Unfortunately Trevor Kenahan made the save for BC to keep the advantage and cleared the ball down field as time expired.

Beloit finished with a 40-36 shot advantage, with Kenahan making 15 saves in the game. Sophomore Pat Collins stopped 11 shots for MSOE.

Chun won 15-of-24 face-offs on the afternoon and led the way with eight ground balls. Meanwhile, seniors James Simonson and Adam Woytcke had three caused turnovers apiece.

The Raiders got off to a strong start, leading 3-1 on three up goals after one quarter. Unfortunately, every time they pulled away by two goals, Beloit responded. The visitors tied the game at 3-3 early and, after MSOE had pulled ahead 8-6 in the third quarter, they rattled off five-straight goals to take the lead for good.

The Raiders return to the field Wednesday in their home finale, hosting Dubuque at 7 p.m.
