Lacrosse Drops Tight Contest with Augustana

Box Score

KENOSHA, Wisconsin – Junior Pat Collins made 10 saves and junior Clay Gustafson scored two goals as the MSOE lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision to Augustana Saturday afternoon at Carthage's Art Keller Field.

The Raiders (0-4) battled the Vikings (3-5) tough but late goals in the second and third fourth quarters proved too much to overcome.

Augie opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game before Gustafson quickly answered less than a minute later. The Vikings would take a 2-1 lead after one quarter with the game's third goal in a 2:12 span.

The teams then traded goals in the second quarter with freshman Collin Fisher tying the game at 2-2 only to see Luke Burrow put Augie ahead 3-2 at halftime with just 2:33 to go in the period. The designated visitors then scored the only game's only goal in the third period inside the final 90 seconds.

Gustafson would make it 4-3 just nine seconds into the fourth quarter off a quick face-off win. Freshman Brett Laffey won the draw, collected the ground ball and quickly found Gustafson for the score.

Augustana re-established the two-goal advantage minutes later and held off any comeback attempt over the remaining time.

Collins led one of the best performances by MSOE so far during this young season, as he saved two-thirds of the shots he faced and allowed a season-low five goals. Laffey won 8-of-12 face-offs in the game, easily the team's best showing in that area this season. The Raiders was also successful on 19-of-21 clears, continuing a trend from their last game when they were a similar 19-for-23.

Shots went 25-19 in favor of Augie and turnovers also benefited the Vikings, 22-20.

The match was played at Carthage due to field conditions at MSOE. The game, due to its distance from campus, was officially a neutral-site game.

The Raiders will continue their quest for the first win of the season Wednesday at Carroll.
