Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Clay Gustafson scored three goals and four other players tallied two goals each as the MSOE lacrosse team defeated Cornell 13-8 Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.
The Raiders (7-7, 4-3 MLC) rattled off five-straight goals to take control of the match and held off the Rams (7-7, 3-4 MLC) the rest of the way.
Cornell actually scored just 13 seconds into the game for an early lead. Junior Oliver Winsor then equalized at the 12:55 mark.
The visitors then regained the lead at 10:41 to spark a flurry of three goals in 21 seconds. Freshman Harrison Davies tied the game again just 13 seconds later and freshman Collin Fischer followed just eight seconds later to make it 3-2 Raiders. They then tacked on another three goals for a 6-2 lead after one quarter.
MSOE held the Rams off in the second quarter, countering each of their goals and adding to its lead with junior Thomas Reid's goal just nine seconds before halftime. That score made it 9-4 at the break.
In the third quarter, A.J. Fisher scored three of his four goals to pull Cornell within 11-8. The Raiders then shut out CC in the fourth quarter with sophomore Jack Fisher tacking on a pair of insurance goals.
Jack Fisher, Davies, Reid, and junior Oliver Winsor each scored twice, with Reid adding a pair of assists.
The Red & White held a 40-26 shot advantage in the game and went 4-for-7 on man-up opportunities. The team also killed off all six man advantages for the Rams.
Junior Pat Collins made eight saves in the game for the win, which made the Raiders 4-3 in league play and put them in the driver's seat for the fourth and final MLC Tournament bid. MSOE hosts Benedictine Wednesday. A win would clinch the program's first league tournament berth. That game is at 7 p.m. at Viets Field.
