Lacrosse Blows By Cornell, 12-4

MEQUON, Wisconsin – Seniors Thomas Reid and Clay Gustafson combined for five goals and six assists on Senior Day, leading the MSOE lacrosse team to a 12-4 victory over Cornell in a match played Saturday afternoon at CUW's Fitting Field.

The Raiders (11-3, 4-3 MLC) jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead and put the Rams (6-6, 3-4 MLC) away with four-straight goals to end the game.

Reid scored three goals and tallied three assists to pace the offense. Gustafson scored twice and set up three other goals to put himself on the verge of 100 career assists with 99 by the game's end. Senior Oliver Winsor scored two goals and had two assists while seniors Oliver Kennedy and Jake Carney also got on the scoresheet with goals.

Sophomore Collin Fischer scored two goals and freshman Quinn Erdmann scored once to represent the underclassmen on the roster.

Senior Pat Collins stopped five shots in the cage to collect the win.

Gustafson opened the game's scoring at the 9:46 mark of the first quarter. Winsor doubled the advantage to 2-0 just 33 seconds later and Fischer netted a goal at 7:26 to make it 3-0 quickly.

Cornell would get on the board with six seconds to go in the frame but the Raiders outscored the visitors 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead into halftime. Reid struck twice in the period, at 10:02 and again with 44 seconds remaining and the man advantage.

The Rams won the third quarter 2-1 and looked to keep close by trading goals to start the fourth quarter. Conor Hollowell's goal at 12:49 of the fourth quarter made it 8-4.

It was all MSOE from there. Winsor scored at 8:23 and a trio of scorers found the back of the net in a 1:40 span late in regulation to put the game away.

The Raiders overmatched Cornell, forging sizable advantages in shots, 39-16; ground balls, 45-28; and turnovers, 18-28. MSOE was also 22-for-22 on clears, against 18-of-27 for CC, and won 12 of the 20 faceoffs.

Sophomore Jacob Killian caused five turnovers in the game and freshman Jacob Boynewicz forced four to lead the defense. Killian also collected a team-high six ground balls.

The Raiders return to action Wednesday, hosting Concordia Wisconsin.
